Missoula is a dog town with a lot of room to run, from fenced dog parks along the Clark Fork to open ridges where dogs can go off leash under voice control. The rules change by place and by season, mostly to protect wintering elk and deer, so a few minutes of planning keeps you and your dog on the right side of them.

Right now, in mid-October 2026, every area below is open to dogs. The big seasonal change comes Dec. 1, when most of Mount Jumbo and part of the Rattlesnake close.

## The basic rule in town

[City of Missoula](https://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/623/Where-Can-My-Dog-be-Off-Leash?ref=missoula-commons.com) ordinance requires dogs to be leashed on all city streets, trails and parks, unless a sign says otherwise. That includes the riverfront trails, downtown and neighborhood parks. Pick up after your dog everywhere. Free Mutt Mitt bags are stocked at city trailheads, and full bags go back to a trash can, not beside the trail.

Under Montana law, it is illegal for any dog to chase or harass wildlife or livestock. Report a loose, out-of-control dog to Missoula Animal Control at 406-541-7387.

## Off-leash dog parks

Missoula Parks and Recreation runs these off-leash areas, according to the [city's dog park list](https://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/623/Where-Can-My-Dog-be-Off-Leash?ref=missoula-commons.com). Dogs need to be licensed and vaccinated, and aggressive dogs are not allowed.

- Jacobs Island Bark Park, 6 S. Van Buren St.: about six acres at the east end of Jacobs Island Park, near the University of Montana. It is fenced on three sides and double-gated, with the Clark Fork River along the fourth side, so dogs can swim. The riverbank is not fenced.
- Sgt. Bozo Dog Park at Fort Missoula Regional Park: a four-acre, double-gated park with a separate small-dog area, west of the tennis courts and softball fields. Park at the tennis courts, 3219 Fort Missoula Road.
- MRL Park Dog Area, South Avenue and Johnson Street: a 0.8-acre double-gated park.
- Playfair Park Pup Pen, 3001 Bancroft St.: a fenced area west of the basketball courts, set up for obedience and agility practice.
- Hellgate Small Dog Park, 1535 E. Broadway: for dogs under 30 pounds or under 14 inches tall.

## Off-leash on city open space

Mount Sentinel, Mount Jumbo, the North Hills and the Tower Street Conservation Area allow dogs off leash under voice restraint, outside posted leash zones. The [city's conservation lands rules](https://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/299/Dogs-on-City-Owned-Conservation-Land?ref=missoula-commons.com) define voice restraint as being within 75 feet of your dog and able to call it back every time, no matter what wildlife, dogs or people are around. A dog that runs up to strangers or chases deer belongs on a leash.

Leash up in parking areas and within 200 yards of trailheads. Watch for posted leash zones, which can change for weed-control sheep grazing in summer or for trail work.

### Mount Sentinel

Leashes are required where posted, including the M trail and sections of the south-face trails. Elsewhere, voice restraint applies.

### North Hills and Waterworks Hill

The North Hills stay open to dogs year round. Dogs must be leashed on the first 300 yards of the Waterworks trail and wherever posted. In spring, the city requires leashes on the Waterworks Ridge Trail through May 31 to protect [Missoula phlox](https://www.montanarightnow.com/missoula/waterworks-ridge-leash-rule-aims-to-protect-rare-missoula-plant/article%5F11e3fec6-9550-4535-8b8c-01972f5dfab3.html?ref=missoula-commons.com), a rare wildflower found only in the Missoula Valley.

### Mount Jumbo

Mount Jumbo is the big seasonal one. Elk winter on its slopes, and the city closes most of it to people and dogs each winter.

- North of Saddle Road: closed Dec. 1 to about May 1\. Off leash under voice restraint the rest of the year.
- South of Saddle Road: closed Dec. 1 to about mid-March. Off leash under voice restraint the rest of the year.
- The lower L trail (up to the L) and the U.S. West road above Interstate 90, from the Cherry Street trailhead, stay open year round. Dogs must be leashed there Dec. 1 through April 30.

Reopening dates depend on the elk, so the city announces them each spring. Police cite trespassers in closed areas, with fines up to $500.

## Rattlesnake National Recreation Area

The [Rattlesnake](https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/lolo/recreation/rattlesnake-national-recreation-area-wilderness?ref=missoula-commons.com) is Lolo National Forest land at the north edge of town, reached by following Van Buren Street north from Interstate 90 for about three miles. The city's summary of Forest Service rules lists these dog restrictions:

- Dec. 1 to March 1: no dogs from the southern boundary up Rattlesnake Creek to Milepost 1.7.
- Dec. 1 to May 16: no dogs in Spring Gulch or on Stuart Peak Trail 517.
- Year round: no dogs in Sawmill Gulch or Curry Gulch.
- Woods Gulch has no dog restrictions.

Follow the signs at the main trailhead off Sawmill Gulch Road, and call the Missoula Ranger District at 406-329-3814 with questions. The Rattlesnake Greenway along the creek in town is a city trail, so leashes apply there.

## Blue Mountain and Pattee Canyon

[Blue Mountain Recreation Area](https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/lolo/recreation/blue-mountain-recreation-area?ref=missoula-commons.com), southwest of town off U.S. 93 and Blue Mountain Road, is open year round and has no dog restrictions beyond picking up waste, according to the [city's summary](https://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/623/Where-Can-My-Dog-be-Off-Leash?ref=missoula-commons.com). Its wide-open terrain suits dogs with solid recall. The east zone is day use only, closed 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

At [Pattee Canyon Recreation Area](https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/lolo/recreation/pattee-canyon-recreation-area?ref=missoula-commons.com), about four miles up Pattee Canyon Road on the east side of town, the Forest Service requires dogs on a leash shorter than six feet. In winter, dogs are not allowed on the groomed cross-country ski trails.

## Where dogs are not allowed

[Marshall Mountain Park](https://www.missoulacounty.gov/departments/parks-trails-recreation/marshall-mountain-park/park-rules-faqs/?ref=missoula-commons.com), Missoula County's busy trail park east of town, does not allow dogs at any time. Mountain Line buses allow pets only in a carry-on or lap-size carrier, though [service animals](https://mountainline.com/your-trip/faq/?ref=missoula-commons.com) are welcome.

## Dogs on the river

The Clark Fork through town is lined with city trails and parks, so the leash rule applies on the banks. Jacobs Island Bark Park is the easiest legal spot for an off-leash swim. Keep an eye on the current, since the unfenced riverbank leads straight into moving water.

At Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks fishing access sites, the [state's public use rules](https://fwp.mt.gov/conservation/wildlife-management-areas/public-use-rules?ref=missoula-commons.com) require pets in developed areas to be on a leash no longer than eight feet, and owners must clean up after them. Some sites post their own pet rules. If you float with a dog, a dog life jacket is worth packing, especially during high spring flows.
